2,900+ Pet Dogs Registered in Ahmedabad, AMC Drive to Continue till March End

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has officially received registrations of 2,949 pet dogs under the AMC’s latest drive, following a Supreme Court directive on managing stray dogs. Labradors and German Shepherds topped the list of popular breeds in the city. 

West Ahmedabad led the registrations, with 760 registered dogs across 666 owners and some having multiple pets. Interestingly, Siberian Huskies were registered only in this zone, which includes areas like Motera, Naranpura, Law Garden, and Vasna. At the other end, the central zone (covering the walled city) had the lowest count, with just 92 dogs registered for 87 owners.

The AMC first launched this registration drive on January 1, after the Supreme Court upheld provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the updated Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules of 2023, which ban indiscriminate culling as a rabies control measure. The response has been strong, with 2,605 pet owners registering their dogs ahead of the March 31 deadline.

Among exotic breeds, pugs were registered only in the south zone, while Shih Tzus appeared in both the north and south-west zones.

The Northwest zone (Kaligam, Subhash Chowk, Gurukul Road) registered 684 dogs across 617 owners. The Southwest zone (Vastrapur Railway Station, SoBo Center, Fatewadi) logged 535 dogs from 446 owners. The South zone (Ghodasar, Cadila, CTM, Vastral) saw 286 owners register 321 dogs. The North zone (Saraspur Gam, Nava Naroda, Nava Nikol) recorded 195 dogs across 172 owners, while the East zone (Gomtipur Gam, Mahadevnagar, Odhav Gam) registered 340 dogs from 313 owners.

With thousands of pet owners stepping up and registration numbers steadlity rising, the city’s pet registration drive is well underway.
